Voluntary Simplicity, Wabi Sabi, Zen, Downsizing and the Go Slow - Less is More movement all could be said to have their roots in this ancient Chinese philosophy.Throughout its turbulent history, Taoism has encompassed both a metaphysical (spiritual and oracular) as well as fiercely physical element (magic and the martial arts). Taoism has nevertheless remained throughout its many manifestations a beautiful and simple approach to understanding the ebb and flow of our world around us and our place within it.
Encapsulating concepts such as Wu Wei (non-action), Pú (spontaneity and an uncarved presence), softness, receptivity and, pursuing the cycles that nature shows us, Taoist expressions have more recently taken a design form (Feng Shui and Wabi Sabi) and - perhaps more relevant to the digital worker - software design and implementation. More intuitive operating systems with an emphasis on simplicity and productivity as well as programs that aid us in balancing our time and work, our health and education: (Quicksilver, OSX, MacbreakZ, Things etc).

Never in our global history have we been exposed to so much stuff; given so many choices; been exposed to such a barrage of repercussions and consequences that leave us less capable of making the most simplest decision last longer than the life of an email. In order to regain perspective, we need a means to cut though all the noise and data and find that which is really important. This is where An Uncarved Blog can be of help. And a fine cup of tea.
